Young Master was founded in 2013, starting on a 10-hectolitre kit in Ap Lei Chau before outgrowing it. This Wong Chuk Hang brewery, at the Sungib Industrial Centre on Wong Chuk Hang Road, came online in August 2016 with a fully automated 40-hectolitre German brewhouse, multiplying capacity roughly tenfold and making it one of the largest craft brewing operations in Asia. It added bottling and canning lines, an expanded barrel-ageing area and a sour and mixed-fermentation programme built around a custom oak foeder, which the brewery describes as Asia's first dedicated to brewing. The original Ap Lei Chau site ran small-batch releases until it was decommissioned at the end of 2023.
The range runs from Hong Kong Lager, Classic Pale Ale, an unfiltered Pilsner and the 1842 Imperial IPA to the salty lemon tea Cha Chaan Teng Gose, barrel-aged imperial stouts such as Black Impermanence and wild ales, plus an alcohol-free pale ale and the HIGHERTHAN canned highballs. Young Master is one of Asia's most decorated breweries, with recent trophies at the Cathay Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition, the Asia Beer Awards and the International Beer Cup.
Visits are now by private brewery tour. The brewery's site lists a two-hour session for up to 20 people, led by the brewing team through the brewhouse, ingredients and techniques, with guided tastings of signature and seasonal beers along the way. It is priced per group (HK$5,000 per session at the time of writing) and booked by email, so it suits team outings and groups of friends; closed-toe shoes are required on the production floor.
There is no casual drop-in bar here. To drink the beer fresh, head to Young Master Central, the flagship taproom with ten taps in BaseHall 01 at Jardine House, or order bottles, cans and freshly filled draught crowlers from the online shop. The brewery is a seven-minute walk from Wong Chuk Hang MTR Exit A1.
