Craftbeer Keg Nagoya

Craftbeer Keg Nagoya opened in 2009, and locals date the start of the city's craft beer scene to that year. It was opened by the Okadaya Liquors group, whose Sakaya Okadaya shop in Yanagibashi Market went on to launch Y. Market Brewing in 2014, and it is now run as the brewery's sister outlet. It sits in Higashi-sakura, by the NHK Nagoya Broadcasting Center and Hisaya Odori Park, two minutes from the Nagoya TV Tower and Oasis 21.

There are 13 taps, rotated daily, and a beer that sells out is simply replaced with the next one. Y. Market's hazy IPAs, lagers and seasonals come direct from source, including its American-influenced Sky Pale Ale series. The daily rotation draws on microbreweries across Japan, favouring labels that rarely reach Tokyo or Osaka, with guests from Hokkaido and Izu and the occasional aged beer; the bar suggests calling ahead if you are after one of those. Craft gin and other spirits are also stocked.

The space is chic and intimate, with counter seats suited to solo drinkers, tables that join up for groups, and a small terrace table when the glass doors are opened in summer. The kitchen serves creative Chinese izakaya food in small plates, such as spiced chicken gyoza, boiled dumplings and yurin chicken, and earlier reviews also mention a cult baby sardine and olive pizza.

It's a 4-minute walk from Sakae Station. The bar's site lists weekday opening from 5pm and weekend opening from 3pm for daytime drinking, with no regular closing day. Ask about all-you-can-drink courses from ¥5,500, or ¥6,500 for access to all 13 taps with food; English menus are available.
