Yanaka Beer Hall occupies the ground floor of a beautifully restored 1938 wooden kominka house in the Ueno Sakuragi Atari complex, a trio of renovated Showa-era homes reimagined as a community hub in one of Tokyo's most traditional neighbourhoods. The bar opened in 2015 and has become a landmark of the Yanaka area — a nostalgic pocket of old Tokyo, famous for its temples, cat-filled alleys, and Yanaka Ginza shopping street.
The interior is all amber-stained timber, antique furniture, Showa-era bric-a-brac, and vintage newspapers found in the walls during renovation. The tap list runs to around nine handles, all brewed by August Beer. The Yanaka series — Yanaka Beer (dark, roasted malt), Yanaka Dry, Yanaka Golden, and Yanaka Bitter — forms the core, with rotating August Beer specials alongside. Pours come in three sizes: small (285ml) from ¥700, regular (385ml) from ¥1,000, and large (568ml) from ¥1,300. Tasting flights of four 130ml pours are ¥1,600.
A short menu of snacks cooked in Iga-yaki clay pottery accompanies the beers. The courtyard complex also houses a Norwegian bakery and an artisan condiment shop. The outdoor courtyard seats are a lovely spot on good weather days.
