Turning Wheels Brewery holds a singular place in Philippine craft beer history: when American expat and home-brewer Michael Nikkel opened the taproom at Mabolo in 2014, it was the first dedicated craft brewery in Cebu and one of a tiny handful in the entire country. More than a decade on, it remains the anchor of Cebu's craft beer scene and a pilgrimage stop for any serious beer drinker passing through the Visayas.

The taproom is a product of its founder's personality β€” practical, unpretentious, and built for conversation. Converted shipping containers form the main structure, surrounded by a relaxed open-air garden with wooden furniture, bicycle dΓ©cor throughout, and a compact bar pouring the brewery's own beers on tap. The cycling theme is deliberate: Nikkel built the brewery around the idea that great beer and long rides belong together, and the venue has become a natural gathering point for Cebu's cycling community as well as its craft beer drinkers.

The beer list is rooted in American West Coast brewing tradition. The Mountain King IPA β€” fruity, citrus-forward, and at 7% ABV the taproom's perennial bestseller β€” is the benchmark. The Singlespeed Imperial Stout delivers roasted malt depth for darker-beer enthusiasts. A rotating supporting cast covers wheat beers, pale ales, double IPAs, and occasional special releases, all brewed on-site from a combination of imported malt and local ingredients. Food is handled by Sal's Kitchen on-site, with a menu of smash burgers, pork tacos, and curly fries that pair well with the house pours.

Turning Wheels is tucked on a side street in Mabolo β€” easy to miss if you're not looking β€” but well worth seeking out. The atmosphere is low-key and welcoming, the staff knowledgeable, and the beers consistent. For anyone in Cebu with an interest in craft beer, this is the natural first stop.
