Abundance (Redhill)

Abundance began in this humble ground-floor unit under an HDB block at 63A Lengkok Bahru in Redhill, pairing modern Taiwanese comfort food with craft beer and handcrafted cocktails. The idea caught on, and the group has since opened sister outlets at 399 Jalan Besar and at Century Square in Tampines, but Redhill remains the flagship regulars point to and the place where the gua bao, which the group itself calls the signature that started it all, first appeared.

The food is the anchor. The gua bao is a soft steamed bun stuffed with braised pork belly; the herbal braised pork rice (lu rou fan) is the classic Taiwanese rice bowl; and the menu also runs to Taiwanese beef noodles, golden chicken mee sua and Taiwanese cold noodles. All of it is salty, rich and well suited to a cold beer from the rotating list, which takes in craft beers rather than just the usual mainstream lager, alongside the house cocktails.

This is a neighbourhood restaurant-bar rather than a specialist beer bar, so ask what is pouring when you order. It works for a casual dinner with friends, a weekday lunch or a relaxed drink after work in the estate.

It is a short walk from Redhill MRT, with ample parking in the neighbouring HDB multi-storey car park. The group's own site lists Redhill open daily from 11am to 10pm, with the kitchen's last orders at 9pm, so arrive in good time if you want to eat.
