Chitbeer is the OG of Thai craft beer. Founded by Colonel Wichit "Chit" Saiklao on the tranquil island of Ko Kret in Nonthaburi β just 15 miles up the Chao Phraya River from central Bangkok β the bar has been quietly sparking a brewing revolution since 2012. Long before craft beer was mainstream in Thailand, Chit was fermenting his own small-batch brews, training hundreds of students in home-brewing, and building the community that now underpins Bangkok's entire independent beer scene.
The setting is unlike any other bar in greater Bangkok. Ko Kret is a car-free, largely Mon-ethnic island accessible only by a three-baht wooden ferry from Wat Sanam Nuea pier in Pak Kret. Chitbeer occupies a relaxed open-air riverfront spot: wooden tables and chairs spill toward the water, a compact bar holds the taps, and a rotating lineup of 8β10 beers is always pouring β IPAs, NEIPAs, wheat beers, stouts, pale ales, and seasonal sours, including beers from former Chit students who now run their own Bangkok micros. Live music kicks off in the evenings, and the house rule of "one song, one beer" keeps things spirited. Bar snacks β chicken wings, fried pork, edamame β round out a long afternoon on the river.
The journey is part of the experience. Take the MRT Pink Line to Yak Pak Kret station, then a 25-baht motorbike taxi to the pier, or the Chao Phraya Express Boat direct to Ko Kret. On the island, turn left from the ferry and follow the riverside path for five minutes. Chitbeer is open weekends only (SaturdayβSunday, noon to 9pm), so plan accordingly. Dog-friendly, cash-preferred, and perennially packed by mid-afternoon β arrive early for a riverside seat.
