Hair of the Dog (Phrom Phong)

Hair of the Dog was founded in 2015 by Canadians Mike MacDonald — also the man behind Mikkeller Bangkok — and Pete Spalding, both Mikkeller Bangkok alumni. The Phrom Phong site opened about a year after the Phloen Chit original and is the larger and more theatrical of the pair, which is why Google files it as the "Craft Beer and Gin Experience". The group won BK Magazine's best beer bar for the second year running in 2025, and was previously ranked the top craft beer spot in Thailand and second in Asia by RateBeer two years in a row.

The theme is asylum and operating theatre, executed at scale: genuine hospital operating lights on the ceiling, operating tables pressed into service as furniture, vintage optometry and medical equipment, stainless steel surfaces and red lighting. Time Out called it "unsettling yet oddly attractive". Three floors each do something different — the craft beer bar at ground level, a gin and cocktail bar on the mezzanine looking down over the taps, and the Breakfast Story restaurant on the third floor serving breakfast and all-day food.

Thirteen rotating taps, recently refitted with Czech side-pour, cover imported craft from the US, Scandinavia and Europe plus Thai beers and ciders, backed by hundreds of bottles and cans including a dedicated stout fridge. Roughly 20% comes off bottle prices for takeaway. Snacks on the beer floor are curated rather than an afterthought — cheesy larb balls, buffalo chicken tenders, Canadian poutine, grilled mac and cheese — with vegetarian options, and the restaurant floor covers anything more substantial. Reckon on ฿400–1,200 a head; note that VAT and service are added on top of menu prices, a recurring point in reviews.

Happy-hour specials run before 6pm and there is a weekly ladies' night at half price, though sources disagree on which night, so check before planning around it. Regular programming includes beer cocktail nights, Sunday movie nights, brewery takeovers, launch parties and blind tastings, and there are arcade games. Seasonal gift boxes appear too, including a 12-beer Christmas box.

It is tucked into the Soi Villa parking area off Sukhumvit Soi 33/1, about a four-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong. Wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking, groups welcome, LGBTQ+ friendly and dog friendly. Opening at 11am makes it one of the few Bangkok craft beer bars genuinely usable at lunchtime.
