Renegade Craft Beer & Ciders

Renegade is a long-standing Old Town bar at 47 Moonmuang Road, close to Thapae Gate, and it bills itself as the only air-conditioned sports bar in the centre of Chiang Mai. It leans sports bar in feel, with big screens showing Premier League and Champions League football, Formula 1, rugby, UFC, NBA, NFL, MotoGP and golf, and a lively crowd for major matches. But the beer is the real draw.

The fridge wall holds more than 300 craft beers and ciders from around the world, from American, Australian, European, Japanese and Thai producers. Best-sellers on the bar's own list include local Chiang Mai Beer's Red Truck red ale and Blossom weizen, Full Moon's Chatri IPA, Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA, and goses from Founders and a Cloudwater collaboration. Rotating draught lines add ales and IPAs, with New Zealand's Hallertau No. 2 pale ale and No. 7 Maximus IPA among the regulars, alongside Maisel's Weisse, Leffe and Guinness for those who want something familiar. The cider side of the name is no afterthought, with its own rotating selection; Stowford Press is a regular.

Food is supplied by UGO Restaurant: Thai and international dishes, burgers and a long list of pizzas, from margherita to five-cheese, Calabrese gorgonzola and prosciutto crudo, which suit a session in front of the football.

The nine-foot American pool tables are, the bar says, among the best in town. A game is just 20 baht, tables can be rented by the hour, and play is half price before 6pm, which makes an afternoon here good value. It is an easy base for a long session of good beer and casual games in the middle of Old Town, and it suits sports fans, travellers wanting a break from the heat and anyone keen to try a wide range of bottles in one place.
