China Bear is the undisputed anchor of Mui Wo's social scene and the first stop for hikers, cyclists, and day-trippers arriving by ferry from Central. Perched on the harbourfront beside the Mui Wo pier on Lantau's eastern shore, it has the kind of effortless charm that comes from years of doing exactly what a good pub should do: cold drinks, honest food, and a terrace where you can watch the boats come and go. The beer list covers the bases well — draught standards alongside a selection of craft bottles and cans, including what the bar bills as "Unexplored Crafts" alongside the usual suspects. It's not a specialist taproom, but for Lantau it punches well above the island's otherwise thin craft beer offering. The food menu is proper pub fare: fish and chips, burgers, calamari, grilled mains, and hearty salads — everything you want after a morning on the Lantau Trail or a bicycle ride around the island. Happy hour runs weekdays from 5pm to 9pm and Saturday to Sunday from 8:30am to 1pm, making the weekend morning session something of a Lantau institution. Many people time their ferry back to Central to squeeze in a pint on the sea wall first. The bar is family-friendly and dog-welcoming, and the outdoor seating spills out onto a harbour promenade that gives it an almost Mediterranean feel on a sunny day.
