Heart of Darkness Brewery was founded in 2016 by John Pemberton and a group of friends with the ambition to produce premium craft beer in Vietnam. Named after the Joseph Conrad novella, the brewery lives up to its bold branding with adventurous, intensely flavoured beers that have won multiple medals at competitions across the Pacific Rim.
The flagship Kurtz's Insane IPA — brewed with seven types of hops for a 7.1%, 102 IBU assault with grapefruit and citrus — is one of the most distinctive IPAs in Southeast Asia. The rotating list also includes Dream Alone Mosaic Pale Ale, Loose Rivet NEIPA, Directors Cacao Porter, and a regular stream of seasonal releases. The taproom has 20+ taps on site, with 10 core range beers always available.
The District 1 taproom at 31D Lý Tự Trọng features a large shaded patio and an air-conditioned bar. The menu covers pub grub designed to match the beers. Live music and comedy nights run regularly. Heart of Darkness exports to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
