Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is the birthplace and beating heart of Vietnam's craft beer revolution. The city's craft scene took root in the early 2010s when a handful of pioneering microbreweries set up in District 1, drawing on local Vietnamese ingredients to create something genuinely distinct from Western craft traditions. Pasteur Street Brewing Company became the most internationally celebrated of these pioneers, earning a global reputation for beers brewed with jasmine, rambutan, Saigon cinnamon and other regional ingredients. Heart of Darkness, East West Brewing and a growing roster of successors have kept the scene fresh and increasingly ambitious.
The craft beer trail in Ho Chi Minh City is centred on District 1, with bars and breweries clustered around the backpacker streets of Bui Vien and De Tham, and spreading into the quieter lanes off Pasteur and Le Loi. District 2 (now part of Thu Duc City) has a more residential, expat-friendly character with several quality spots alongside its restaurant strip. Binh Thanh is a quieter emerging area. The combination of excellent locally brewed craft beer, very affordable prices and a warm, welcoming bar culture makes Ho Chi Minh City one of the most enjoyable craft beer destinations in all of Asia.
