Yilan, on Taiwan's northeast coast across the mountains from Taipei, punches above its size for craft beer. It is home to Jim & Dad's Brewing Company, the father-and-son brewery that turned a disused gravel quarry in Yuanshan into one of Taiwan's first craft beer tourism sites, and to Black Drongo Brewing, a small independent brewery in Yilan City run by two Pacific Northwest natives and their Taiwanese partner. Both brew with a strong local streak, from Taiwanese wheat and fruit to beers named after Yilan's beaches and mountains.
The Lanyang Plain is flat, green and easy to explore, so a beer day here pairs well with the Jiaoxi hot springs to the north or the surf beaches around Toucheng. The Yuanshan brewery keeps daytime hours and suits a lunch stop with a view, while Yilan City's taprooms open in the evening. This directory is updated daily as the scene changes.
