Small Jakarta-area craft brewery launched in 2022 by brewer Laki Gushary, brewing in Serang, Banten, with an all-seasonal line-up of pale ales, sours and big IPAs.
Kulturale launched in late 2022 and is run by co-founder, director and head brewer Laki Gushary, who had been brewing for more than ten years before it opened. Laki also co-founded Coffeebeerian in 2012, the Jakarta coffee and craft beer bar now known as COBE JKT, where he once bottled and sold his homebrew. The beer is brewed in Serang, Banten, west of Jakarta, and Kulturale describes itself as the first craft brewery out of the Jakarta area. It works in small batches with a seasonal line-up that changes every few months, built around beer styles not yet common in Indonesia and often with a local twist. The range is split into three families: Madja, easy-drinking hop-led beers; Aksen, experimental and flavour-forward; and Tall Tales, big and complex.
The beers
Madja, session IPA, 3.8%
Amarillo, single-hop session IPA, 4.8%
Bravo, single-hop pale ale, 4.8%
Aksen Naganini, fruited sour with red dragon fruit, 5%
Tall Tales Nyi Roro Kidul, West Coast double IPA, 8%
LL Stout, sweet stout with spekoek spices, 4.8%
Other releases have included Hano, an 8% super saison, and a run of small Proto test batches. The beer is sold in cans and on draught.
Where to drink it
Kulturale has no taproom of its own. In Jakarta, its home bar is COBE JKT on Jl. Ciragil II in Kebayoran Baru, which Laki co-founded, and it is on the taps and in the fridges at Beer Belly nearby. In Bali, look for it at Lola's Taproom in Sanur. All three are listed below.
