North East Singapore covers the fast-growing residential towns of Punggol, Sengkang, Hougang, Serangoon and Ang Mo Kio, plus the quiet heritage enclave of Seletar. This is heartland Singapore, a long way from the CBD bar strips, and its craft beer scene is made up of neighbourhood bars that serve the families, young couples and long-time residents who live here.
The bars are spread out rather than clustered, so each one works as a local favourite rather than a stop on a crawl. In Punggol, Daruma Tavern pours rotating Singapore craft beer by the waterway. Kovan, on Upper Serangoon Road, has Beer Basket with its wall of bottles and cans, while myVillage in Serangoon Gardens is home to a Yeast Side outlet pairing sourdough pizza with craft beer.
Further north, Seletar Aerospace Park is in a class of its own. Brewerkz pours its house-brewed beers in a colonial-era bungalow at The Oval, among the preserved black-and-white houses of Singapore's oldest aerodrome. It is best reached by taxi or car, and well worth the trip for a slow afternoon pint in green, low-rise surroundings.
