East Coast & Changi

The East Coast is Singapore's most beloved residential corridor and one of the island's most characterful craft beer destinations. Stretching from the Peranakan shophouses of Katong and Joo Chiat through the beachside suburbs of Siglap and Bedok to the old-Singapore village atmosphere of Changi, this is a part of the island that rewards slow exploration on foot or bicycle — and that rewards it with some genuinely excellent craft beer stops along the way. The East Coast Park, a 15-kilometre strip of beach and cycling paths along the southern shoreline, forms the spine of the area, and the bar and restaurant scene is concentrated in the streets and shophouse rows running parallel to it. Katong and Joo Chiat are the cultural heart of the East Coast, with a dense cluster of Peranakan restaurants, indie bakeries, and neighbourhood bars that draw residents from across the island on weekend evenings. Further east, Siglap's community of long-term residents has supported its own set of neighbourhood bars, including one of Singapore's best-stocked craft beer venues in a compact ground-floor shophouse space. At the far east, Changi Village is in a category of its own — a surviving piece of old kampung Singapore that happens to be home to one of the island's most celebrated craft breweries. With its own brewed beers, shaded outdoor terrace, and Changi Point ferry terminal just down the road, Little Island Brewing Co makes the journey to the eastern tip of Singapore entirely worthwhile. The East Coast is best approached with time to spare and no particular rush to be anywhere else.
