Music-themed Saigon beer brand founded in 2020 by a Californian homebrewer, known for Peaches and Cream IPA and cans sold across Vietnam.
MixTape Drinks, or MixTape Beverage Company, was founded in Ho Chi Minh City in 2020 by Chad Mitchell, an American homebrewer from Santa Rosa, California, who had worked in Vietnam for the regional craft beer distributor Beervana. Its slogan is "Born in California, Brewed in Vietnam", and like the name, everything about the brand plays on music. The first beer, Peaches and Cream IPA, launched in August 2020. In 2021 brewer and distiller James Waters and Shawn Kidd, founder of Taiwan importer EastDrinksWest, joined as partners. In 2022 the company said it was growing through contract-brewed products in Vietnam, with its own brewhouse as a longer-term plan. MixTape also runs its own cold-chain distribution. At the 2022 Asia Beer Championship, Peaches and Cream and Molly both received Chairman's Selection awards.
The beers
Peaches and Cream, West Coast-style IPA with Citra hops and no fruit, 6.9%
California Sun, hazy wheat beer, 5.4%
Molly, milk stout, 4.4%
Ole!, Mexican-style lager brewed with broken rice, 5.3%
Saigon Oi, pale ale, 5.4%
MixTape also makes the ParTea hard teas at 4.2%, in green tea with lotus and lemon, red with Da Lat black tea and raspberry, and black versions, plus one-off releases such as AI Hazy Love and My Milkshake. The cans are sold in selected 7-Eleven stores in Vietnam, and the company says it has more than 200 distribution partners.
Where to drink it
MixTape's pink-neon taproom at 40 Dang Thi Nhu in District 1, opened in 2023, has closed while the company moves to a new home in Ho Chi Minh City, and no new address has been announced yet. Until it reopens, MixTape delivers cold across the city through its online shop, and the cans turn up in hotels, restaurants and bottle shops around Vietnam. Over the border, MixTape cans are on the imported list at Sak Pub in Phnom Penh, which is listed below.
