Hong Kong craft brewery founded in 2015 and named after the Lion Rock spirit of perseverance, brewing pale ales, IPAs and beers with local flavours such as osmanthus and chrysanthemum.
Lion Rock Brewery was founded in 2015, taking the "Lion Rock Spirit" of 1970s Hong Kong, a byword for hard work and perseverance, as its starting point. Founder Terence leads the business and Ben heads the brewing team, and the brewery describes itself as a local brand built by Hong Kong people to give the city its own flavour. It says it uses no artificial additives and works local ingredients into its recipes, including osmanthus, lemongrass, green tea, hazelnut and chrysanthemum, and it also runs a barrel-aged programme. Beyond Hong Kong, its beers have been exported to Tokyo, Osaka, Chengdu and Macau.
The beers
Lion Rock Signature, pale ale, 5.2%
Grandmaestro, IPA, 6.4%
Icy Lotus, white IPA, 5.4%
Oriental Pearl, oatmeal stout, 5.9%
Wheat Lover, wheat beer, 4.5%
All the Best, session pale ale, 3.9%
Most beers carry Cantonese names alongside the English, and the list is topped up with seasonals and one-offs such as a Tieguanyin tea ale, a cucumber lager and an imperial brown ale inspired by yuen yeung, the coffee and tea drink. Beers are bottled and sold through the online shop.
Where to drink it
Lion Rock does not currently list a taproom of its own. It is a fixture at the local-only bars Kowloon Taproom in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong Island Tap House in Tin Hau and Soho Taproom in Central, where the All the Best session pale ale has been on tap through 2026, and it has long been seen on tap at Rugger's 28 in Causeway Bay. All of these are listed below.
