Miri

Miri is Sarawak's second city, an oil town on the northern coast of Borneo close to the Brunei border, and it has quietly become the best place in East Malaysia to drink the state's own craft beer. Sarawak is unusual in Malaysia in having licensed small breweries: 1602 Craft Beer in Kuching was the first, and Leyd Brewing Co, launched in Kuching in 2023, followed with a draught-led range built for the Sarawak market. Both find their way north to Miri, alongside Hornbill beers brewed in the state and a healthy trade in imported cans and bottles.

Most of the drinking happens around Marina Parkcity and Miri Times Square on the waterfront, where wine bars, restaurants and beer bars sit in the same commercial blocks, with a few more spots out in Lutong to the north. It is a small scene, more wine bar with good beer than dedicated taproom, but for anyone passing through on the way to Mulu, Niah or Brunei it is worth an evening.
