Taoyuan production brewery founded by two Americans, known for Tai.P.A., one of the first IPAs brewed in Taiwan, and poured at craft beer bars across the island.
Redpoint Brewing Co. (in Chinese, Hong Dian Jing Niang) was started by Spencer Jemelka, from Boulder, Colorado, and Doug Pierce, from near Chicago, two Americans who met through the Taipei Baboons rugby club. The name comes from a rock-climbing term. They began selling beer in 2014, at first brewed under contract in Hsinchu, and the brewery says its flagship Tai.P.A. went through 88 test brews before it became one of the first IPAs brewed in Taiwan. Redpoint now brews at its own site just outside Taoyuan City, which Beer52 described in 2025 as three neighbouring industrial units with a 35hl brewhouse. It also brews for other brands under contract and distributes in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The beers
Tai.P.A., American IPA, 5.8%
Long Dong Lager, American lager, 4.8%
Disco Macaw, pale ale, 6%
Hazy Platypus, New England IPA, 6%
The Pomellinator, New England IPA, 7%
Long Dong is named after a climbing spot on Taiwan's north-east coast. Alongside the core range there are seasonals such as a pumpkin ale and a Marzen, plus collaborations with breweries in Taiwan and abroad, sold on draught and in bottles and cans.
Where to drink it
Redpoint's Taipei taproom closed in January 2024 when its building was earmarked for urban renewal, so look for the beer at other bars. In Tainan it is a regular at Piao-Lounge. In Taipei it turns up at Ximen Beer Bar, Learn Bar, ON TAP, where Long Dong is a fixture, The 58 Bar, Floating Taipei and the bottle shop Crafted. All of these are listed below.
